Why do so many people struggle to get their knowledge of the Bible and their obedience to the Bible to match up? It’s because their academic theology doesn’t match their practical theology. Paul David Tripp wrote: “Theology is not just a pursuit of the mind; it is something that you do with your whole life. The theology that you actually believe is always exhibited by the way you live. For too many of us, a disconcerting gap lies between what we say we believe and the way we live” (Everyday Gospel). Most people think of theology only as the academic pursuit of knowledge of God and the teachings of His Word. This is definitely a major part of theology (biblical, historical and systematic), but there is a fourth type of theology—pastoral or practical theology. Practical theology asks this question: Do you practice what you say you believe? Or to put it another way: Are you watching your theology?
