In the wake of great tragedy—the drowning of his four daughters after a collision at sea, Horatio Spafford penned these famous lyrics from the hymn: “It Is Well with My Soul.”

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

This kind of peace eludes most people today. God’s Word has much to say about the concept of peace; but too often, we read these words and think to ourselves that it is just wishful thinking. In John 14:27, Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Jesus not only promised His followers peace; here in Luke 19, He became the epitome of peace!
