A.W. Tozer said, “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until he has hurt him deeply.” Jacob was no different. Jacob was a schemer and a deceiver and yet God chose him to be the recipient of His covenant blessing to Abraham and his descendants. But this did not come easy. God had to do a work in Jacob’s life to bring him to a place where he would stop depending on his own strength and depend completely on God.
