Sermon – He Came Back in Power

He came in peace.

What robs you of your peace?

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

He Came Back in Power

Philippians 3:8-10

Romans 10:9 says, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

John 10 is the great chapter on the Good Shepherd where Jesus says, “I know My sheep and they know Me.”

1 John 5:20, the Bible says,
“And we know that the Son
of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

Knowing Christ IS Knowing His Power!
Philippians 3:8-10

8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—

10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

  (English Standard Version)

Knowing Him is more than knowing about Him!

  • To know (in verse10) means “to know by experience.” (8b-9)
  • Paul’s deep desire here is an on going, daily experience with God.
  • Are we living in the last days that Paul describes in 2 Timothy 3:1-7?
  • What does he say people will be like?

Believing in Him is believing in His power!

  • Ephesians 1:18 – 2:10
  • “the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe” (v 18)
  • “that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead” (v 19)
  • “seated him at his right hand” (v 19)
  • Ephesians 1:18 – 2:10
  • God “raised us up with him and seated   us with him” (v 6)
  • “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (v 10)
  • Most of us believe in the power that raised Christ from the grave, but do we believe that same power can transform our life?

To share His sufferings is more than suffering in this life!

  • God uses difficult times and circumstances to conform us to the image of His Son! This glorifies Him!
  • 2 Corinthians 4:7-11
  • Light is only able to shine forth from a pot that is broken!

Becoming like Him is dying to the power of sin!

  • The phrase “becoming like him” is unique. It has a special meaning of “being conformed inwardly in one’s experience to something,” in this case, Christ’s death.
  • Philippians 3:20-2120 “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.”
  • Romans 6:66 “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”
  • Romans 12:22 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,”

To know Him is to want to know Hime more!

1 Corinthians 15:19

“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”
